Time for an Update

I meant to update yesterday but we only accomplished one thing out of 4 or 5 which we set out to do, so I was just keeping up with the day. Before I go into it, Friday made for an enjoyably evening. The Husband, roommate and I headed back towards Camberley for Comedy night at the theater. We had a "quick" dinner (under an hour by British standards) at a New York style Italian place. I don't know why I hadn't been before but the atmosphere was the best so far and the food was good too! I'll have to surely go back. We headed toward the theater and passed BHS, a department store. I was recenlty in there and was on the fence about buying a dress for 25 pounds, but I saw that it was on sale for 15. So guess who's going back to Camberley this week? Comedy night was awesome. The woman opening was American and of course I had to make some noise to represent!!!! We were the only Americans in the club which was not surprising because Camberly isn't a major tourist attraction and needless to say, we got picked on for the rest of the night, all in good fun though. Everyone was hilarious but the last act was something I had never seen. It's hard to explain but it was basically a montage of songs which two guys words as props. I don't generally like prop comedy, as I tend to default my thoughts to Carrot Top but this was very well done. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures because I left the SD card in the computer. Sorry about that.

As I said before, Saturday wasn't was productive as we had originally planned but it sure was eventful. We originally planned to go to synagogue in the morning. The truth is, we do enjoy going to services and since we've been married, we've gone just about every weekend. That is until we got here. The closest synagogue is in Reading. The shul is great, but it's such a schlep to get there. We basically need to designate a little more than a hour to get there and even then, its not direct. We have to get to the train station, get on a train, change trains in Woking and then make our way to synagogue. While we planned to do go yesterday, neither of us could get up when we had to. We will be back though.

We also planned to explore Farnham and Guildford, two towns near by. We wanted to keep it close by this weekend. We went to Farnham first and stayed there long enough it wasn't going to be worth it to go to Guildford before everything shut down. There was plenty to do. I just figured we would walk around each town for a few hours and move on but we were in for  treat in Farnham. We walked towards the hustle and bustle and walked into a few shops. I picked up a gift for my mum ($5 says she'll call or email within five minutes of reading this to find out what it is), and I got this CUTE tea pot cookie cutter for 65 pence! I can't get this tea party out of my head and thought it would be too cute to serve tea pot cookies at a tea party.

For lunch, we walked into a pub called the Queen's Head. The longer I stay here, the more I love this country. You can literally bring your dog everywhere, even in to restaurants. This particular pub had a live-in cat, who looked an awful lot like Falafel. Of course, I had to talk to the locals and the dog's name is Jet, and has three cats back is his home. Gonzo, the cat, however, was not having this dog at his home. So Gonzo was put in the back for a while, but he was soon to return.

I had a delicious Plougman's plate. It's basically, a lunchbox for the field  workers and consisted of roast beef, bread, butter and chutney, salad and picked veggies. Have I mentioned how good the bread is here? You'll hear that a few more times.

The Husband however, had this mess: macaroni and cheese and garlic bread. It was so greasy he couldn't even finish any part of it. The surprising part of this story was it was on the "lighter lunches" side of the menu. He was feeling a little sick of it...wouldn't you if your macaroni was swimming in oil?

Before we left, we got a little more time with Gonzo. Meow.

Then it was off to Farnham Castle. Why do they always have to put a castle on the top of a hill?

TADA! No one actually ever live IN the castle, but the Bishops and other royalty stayed at the Bishop House (the attachment on the right) on their journeys between London and Winchester. The castle keep was just for defense and has actually not seen much war. We wandered around and learned about the castle's 1000 year history.

Ah, that's why they are always at the top of a hill. For the view!

We got home and I didn't want to cook or eat out. We stopped by the grocery store and picked up some chili. I had some couscous on hand so popped that on the stove. Put a little broccoli and cauliflower on the side and VOILA! We also picked up some squash and sparkling water. Squash is a highly concentrated fruit juice. We got apple and black currant. You can dilute it with flat or sparkling water and we decided to go bubbly. What a great refreshing soda...and it only has like 5 calories!

The evening continued with a plan to go to the Swan, a nearby pub with live music. I passed out early and woke up to the Husband Skyping with his family. I'm really glad we actually ended up staying in because the BEST part of our stay happened around 11:30. We got to Skype with FALAFEL! We really miss that little guy and needed to see him after a few minutes with Gonzo. I can't wait to get back home and tell him all about our adventures!

I'm not sure what today holds. We will either be going to Guildford or taking a hike around the Blackwater Valley. I'll be sure to fill you in!

Cheers!
